Commander’s
Message
Having just assumed “The Con” from COL David Schlieper I
find myself writing my first Commander’s message for “The Companion”. I want to thank COL Schljeper for the great
job he has done for the Chapter in leadership, organization, procedures and his
large role in the Chapters continued fiscal viability. The Navy has a term for
a job well done-”Bravo Zulu” and Dave a deserved “Bravo Zulu” to you and
thanks.
I have been blessed with a staff that motivates me to action
and that follow thru on their assignments and staff responsibilities. For those
who have e-mail LTC Amedeo Lauria has put up our own Chapter website, BG Al
White has brought our membership data, roster and emergency call list up to
date. LTC Duehring as the new Adjutant is working hard to learn the nuances and
paper flow that his new position requires him mastering and I am doing the
same.
There are several thrusts that I would like to address this
year but the most important one is that of obtaining new members and getting
them to meetings so they can meet the members and take an active part in the
organization to the level that they wish. COL Schlieper started the “Mentor”
program where it is expected that a new members sponsor actively bring the new
member to his or her first meeting introducing them to the attending members
and help to break the ice and bring them into the group. We are in a position
where we should be able to swell our membership and better support MOWW’s
mission both in Maine and nationally as the number of Commissioned Officer’s in
the State has never been higher. I urge you all to actively recruit 5 new members this year and to be the
mentor or guide into the organization for them.
COL Schlieper and his wife Nancy have graciously agreed to
continue to put out “The Companion” on a quarterly basis and I hope that
between “The Companion” and our new website we will be able to reach our
membership with a consistency not possible before.
I am excited about being the new Commander of the General
Joshua Chamberlain Chapter and thank you all for giving me the opportunity to
do so. I look forward to seeing you all
at our next meeting on 8 September. We have a great speaker on deck with LTC
David Duehring and a great new location.

Our 12 July Staff Planning Meeting

Congratulations COL Benjamin - new State Commander - MOWW!!
As we embark on new year, the
Chapter extends its sincere thanks and deep appreciation to COL Dave Schlieper
who has served these past two years as Chapter Commander. Not only has he
brought the Chapter’s personnel files up to date, but he instituted an
emergency call roster, as well as recruiting and welcoming packages for new
members. To review the many accomplishments these past two years please request
to see a copy of the Chapter’s annual report on file with the Adjutant. Let us all resolve to fully support our
Region and Chapter officers this coming year.

planning meeting scheduled for 11 October 2007.
Companion
of the Quarter
Service and contribution of
an established Companion
The Companion wishes to deviate slightly
from its normal recognition process of selecting a Companion of the Quarter to
take this opportunity, on behalf of the Commander and all Chapter Members, to
extend a welcome home to the HQ 24O~ Engr. Group MEARNG.
We
offer our congratulations for their very successful tour of combat duty in
Afghanistan. Well done!! One of our Companions, LTC David Duehring, served on
the staff of HQ 240th Engr. Grp. occupying the critical staff position of
Forward Tactical Operations Officer.
As
indicated in this newsletter, LTC Duehring will be our guest speaker for the 8
September 2007 Chapter Meeting. Don’t miss his presentation.
LTC
Duehring has since retired and is now also our Chapter Adjutant. He retired following
more than thirty dedicated and faithful years of both enlisted and commissioned
service. He served both in the United States Navy for three years here in Maine
at the Brunswick Naval Air Station and the balance of his career, following
OCS, as a commissioned officer in the MEARNG.
His
many assignments in both staff and command positions produced an officer of the
highest quality. His active service to both the State of Maine and the Nation
will be deeply missed. We are fortunate to have him on board as a Companion and
as our adjutant.
WELCOME HOME, DAVE, GOD BLESS!!!
