Lieutenant Colonel Lauria was born in Mount Vernon, New
York.
He is a 1973 graduate of Clairemont High School, San Diego,
California.
He first served at Fort Bliss, Texas, as an enlisted soldier in
the Signal Corps from 1973 to 1976.
At the completion of his initial active duty tour he became a
member of the United States Army Reserve and served from 1976-1982 in both
enlisted and officer cadet and officer status, at Camp Pendleton, California.
In May 1982, he
received his commission as a Regular Army, Second Lieutenant, Distinguished
Military Graduate, from San Diego State University’s Army Reserve Officer’s
Training Corps program.
His initial
temporary duty was to help train Army Senior ROTC Cadets at Fort Lewis,
Washington during the summer of 1982.
He performed as the medical in processing OIC and Camp Safety Officer in
the Office of the Camp G1.
His first
permanent duty assignment as an officer began in October 1982 at Fort Devens,
Massachusetts. While there he served as
the Chief, Central Processing Facility, Chief Enlisted Records Branch,
Executive Officer with the 382d Personnel Services Company and finally as
Chief, Enlisted Personnel Management Branch, United States Army Garrison, Fort
Devens.
In July 1986 he and his family transferred for
duty in Berlin (West), Germany and was assigned first as the Assistant Staff
Secretary to the Allied Kommandatura, Allied Staff Berlin, United States
Commander, Berlin, then as Chief
Personnel Management, Berlin Brigade and finally as Deputy Adjutant General with
the Berlin Brigade.
In March 1989, he reported to Heidelberg, Germany to assume
command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Personnel
Command. Upon completion of his first
command, he became Chief, Force Reduction Branch, 1st Personnel Command
where he played a major role in the post Persian Gulf War (Desert Storm) draw-down
in Europe.
He spent a total of six years 1986-1992 in the European theater,
executing two back-to-back tours.
In
July 1992, he became the Senior Assistant Professor of Military Science at
Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. In that position, he recruited as well as trained young men and
women for commissioning as officers in the United States Army.
He
then attended the resident Command and General Staff College in 1994 - 1995
His
next tour was as the Commander, Milwaukee Military Entrance Processing Station,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1995 to 1998.
He was responsible for making sure young men and women applicants were
qualified for entrance in the active and reserve Army.
He then reported to the Pentagon in Washington, D. C. During his tenure in the Pentagon, he held
multiple assignments. His first was in
the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Plans Division, where he
performed duty as a Personnel Systems Staff Officer (PERSSO). His second assignment at the Pentagon was in
the Office of the Secretary of the Army and Chief of Staff of the Army as the
Deputy Director, Executive Communications and Control Office; otherwise know as
one of the “Seven Dwarves.”
His final assignment on active duty was as the Commander of the
New England Recruiting Battalion where he was responsible for recruiting
operations in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Eastern
Massachusetts.
LTC Lauria is currently the Senior Army Instructor at Old Town
High School, Old Town, Maine. He has
held this position since his retirement from active duty in November 2002.
Military education includes: Resident Command and General Staff
College (CGSC), Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Combined Arms and Services Staff
School (CAS3), Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Adjutant General Officer’s
Basic and Courses, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana and the Army’s Force
Management School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Civilian education consists of a Bachelor of Science degree in
Radio, Television, and Film, Master’s work in Communications at San Diego State
University, and a Certificate in
Information Systems Management from the University of Southern California. . He
completed his teacher credentialing work at the University of Maine and
Southern Maine University.
He holds a current teaching credential for Vocational and
Cooperative Education from the State of Maine.
Army JROTC Army Instructor Interviewer for the State of Maine. Army JROTC Master Trainer for the State of
Maine and 2nd Brigade.
His military awards, decorations and badges include the Legion of
Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Medal (5
Awards), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3 Awards), National
Defense Service Medal (3 Awards), Army of Occupation Medal (Berlin), Good
Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Silver Recruiter Badge and
the Army Staff Badge.
He held expert qualifications on the M16 rife and .45 Caliber
pistol while on active duty. He is also
a holder of the Gold German Marksmanship Badge (Scheutzenschnur).
His civilian awards include:
